ARE YOU AN EU CITIZEN LIVING IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC?
If you are a citizen of a European Union country and live in the Czech Republic, you can vote in Czech local (municipal) elections, provided you meet the legal requirements.
YOU CAN VOTE IF YOU:
- Are 18 years old or older by the second day of the election.
- Are a citizen of an EU Member State.
- Have your residence registered in the Czech Republic with either:
- And this residence is in municipality you wish to vote in.
Don’t want any hassle? Register in advance.
To make things easier at the polling station, it’s a good idea to register in advance so that the election committee already has you on the electoral roll.
Here is the form you need to submit to the municipal authority where your registered residence in the Czech Republic is located.
You can submit the form in person, by post, via a Czech Data Box (datová schránka), or by email with a recognized electronic signature, no later than 48 hours before the election.
The form will make the process at the polling station smoother, but registration is not a requirement for the right to vote.
If the election committee refuses to let you vote because you have not registered in advance, ask them to contact the Ministry of the Interior by phone.
SAVE THE DATE
Local elections take place on 9–10 October 2026. On election day, visit your assigned polling station and cast your vote. Your polling station is assigned according to your place of residence, yours will probably find in nearest school or on munucipality website.
When you go to vote, make sure to bring a valid passport or other Czech government recognized ID, together with your Registration Certificate (temporary residence registration) or Permanent Residence Permit. You will get voting voting ballot and voting envelope in the station. You will also need a pen to mark your vote.
How to vote
After verifying your identity and right to vote, you will be given a ballot envelope and one (large) ballot paper for the city council, or a second (smaller) ballot paper for the city district council.
With the ballot papers and envelope, go behind the curtain where there should be a pencil and put a cross in the box on one side of each ballot paper that you want to vote for. Fold the ballot papers into the envelope and throw it into the ballot box. Leave the pencil behind the curtain :)
You can also put crosses on individual candidates, but you will not use your entire vote and your choice will be less effective. And if you make a mistake, your vote will be invalid. More about the process and method of voting, for example, here.
